Touching the magic gold

By Staff Reporter

Whether the burglar knew that the trophy was a replica or not, is not known, but his reaction to seeing the William Webb Ellis Cup was priceless.

The man and an accomplice are seen on CCTV walking confidently into the offices of the South Africa Rugby Union head office in Plattekloof, Cape Town.

The man, wearing a beanie and jeans, walks straight to the reception counter where the copy of the real trophy is on display.

He touches it, smiles, and then stands back. Then he carries on going through cupboards and looking for things to steal.

The two men allegedly went on to steal Springbok jerseys, whisky and eight Saru laptops, with a further 60 laptops stolen from another company in the same area.

But he never thought of taking the cup.

Cops have already taken two men into custody for the theft at Saru and other offices in the building.

Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee shared footage and images of the incident on the social media platform X.
