World news bites: Trudeau quits as Canada’s leader

Rorisang Modiba brings you the latest news from around the world.

Canada – Justin Trudeau says he will quit as Canada’s prime minister after nine years in charge. He will stay on until his party picks a new leader. Trudeau’s decision comes as many Canadians are angry about high prices and a lack of housing. Polls show his party will likely lose to their rivals in the next election. He blamed fights within his party for his exit. Parliament won’t meet again until 24 March, which means no election can happen before May. Trudeau faced growing pressure, especially after a clash with Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who quit after being moved to a lower position.

China – At least 53 people died and 62 others were injured when a big earthquake hit Tibet’s Shigatse city on Tuesday morning. The shaking, which was felt in Nepal and India, broke more than 1,000 houses. Shigatse, an important holy city for Tibetans, was the epicentre of the earthquake. Rescue teams are still helping people. It’s very cold there now, and there’s no power or water in many places. The earthquake happened near Mount Everest, forcing tour companies to cancel trips to see the mountain. Chinese news later said the earthquake was slightly smaller than first thought and that several smaller quakes followed.

USA – The US says Russia is giving money to both sides fighting in Sudan, strengthening earlier claims that Moscow is playing a double game for power. The war, which started in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and a rebel force called the RSF, has left many people suffering. Russia earlier blocked a UN plan to stop the fighting and send help. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield says Russia is involved in Sudan’s gold trade and is helping both fighting groups, condemning any secret deals that keep the war going. Russia’s UN representative Dmitry Polyanskiy says these claims are false and criticised US foreign policy. The US is worried about Russia’s power in Sudan, especially its links to gold mining with banned Russian companies.

New York – Social media star Carol Acosta, known as Killadamente to her 6.7 million Instagram followers, died at 27 after choking while eating with her family in New York City on 3 January. Her sister Katyan shared the sad news on Instagram. Acosta was rushed to hospital after she couldn’t breathe, but doctors couldn’t save her. The family is waiting for test results to find out exactly why she died. People can donate money online to help pay for her funeral.
