World Test Champs may be more than just a dream for Proteas

A fine start to their second test against Bangladesh leaves South Africa’s World Test Championship (WTC) final fate in their hands – a prospect that excites Aiden Markram.

The Proteas scored 307 for the loss of two wickets on day one in Chattogram, following their seven-wicket win in the first game in Dhaka.

Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs scored centuries after the Proteas opted to bat first.

If South Africa get over the line this week, they will need three wins from their next four tests to make the WTC final.

At one pint, the prospect of playing their biggest game seemed a distant dream for the men in green. However, last week’s results saw England exit the race, and India’s hopes dimmed after the two sides’ defeats to Pakistan and New Zealand, respectively.

Stand-in captain Markram said ahead of Tuesday’s action that the WTC is an “exciting opportunity” but not something the players are currently thinking too much about.

“I don’t think it really adds pressure for us. It’s just an exciting opportunity, and that’s how we’re trying to view it. We still have to win a lot of our remaining games,” Markram told reporters.

“We’ve got five left until we know what our fate is because there’s a lot of cricket that still needs to be played.”

“We’re going to go session by session and game by game, but we’re excited by what possibly could be going forward.”
