on the actual shooting.
However, Mthatha Campus SRC Premier Themba Zikhali said students saw what happened and have evidence to prove it.
“When coming back from the KGB singing, he decided to come out with a gun and he started shooting students. So, we’ve got a lot of evidence. We don’t want anyone to use ‘allegedly’ because we saw what happened. There were no warning shots—he started shooting students, he shot three students,” Zikhali said.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Portfolio Chair for Higher Education, Tebogo Letsie, called for accountability from the university.
“The university must urgently investigate this breach of safety protocols, particularly the circumstances that allowed a residence manager to possess a firearm on the premises. There must be consequence management for those who failed to uphold safety standards and allowed this tragedy to occur,” Letsie said.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said no arrests had been made. Earlier, she said police were struggling to get more information from witnesses, as students were preventing them from reaching the crime scene.
