Zulu King’s second wife interdicts third marriage

  • Ructions within the royal family sets another precedent following that of the dispute over the late King Zwelithini’s will and last testament.
  • Latest court move flies in the face of a reported reconciliation between the monarch and his now estranged second wife.

The Zulu royal family divorce identity cat is finally out of the bag.

This follows urgent court papers filed by Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela Zulu in a bid to stop King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s pending nuptials with his third wife, Queen Nomzamo KaMyeni, later this month.

In the court papers, the Zulu Monarch’s second wife argues that she is married in a civil marriage with the reigning king.

She further cites that the monarch recently litigated divorce proceedings against her thus unmasking the identity of whom among the Zulu King’s three wives he had intimated divorce proceedings against.

At the time of the breaking divorce news, the rumour mill went into overdrive as to who’s being divorced, between Queen kaMayisela and king’s eSwatini-based first wife Queen La Makhubu.

In November last year it was reported that Queen kaMayisela, who hails from Newcastle in northern KZN, had returned to the KwaNkomonye royal residence in Ulundi after being away for almost six months.

She also dismissed rumours that she had deserted the monarch because of his pending engagement to Queen KaMyeni.

In the interdict papers filed before court, Queen kaMayisela says: “I can confirm that the Respondent has served me with divorce papers which were lodged in this honourable court.

“The Respondent wishes to get married whilst our marriage still subsists with a pending divorce.”

She further said the balance of convenience favoured her in that she is the spouse in a valid civil marriage.

“There is no other alternative to stop the respondent to commit this bigamous act other than to approach this court urgently,” argued Queen kaMayisela in her court papers.

In addition she issued a media statement through her KaMaskolo Foundation in which she says she had tried to engage senior Zulu royal family members about her unhappiness following rumours of a pending third marriage – to no avail.

The statement further says she intends to challenge and oppose the divorce proceedings.

She said she is not opposed to the Monarch getting married to a third wife but it has to be procedural and respect Zulu customary practices and traditions, as these supersede any other subsequent acts.
